Life Fitness' Signature Series strength line wins prestigious design award

Only exercise equipment to win in annual competition receives a silver award

SCHILLER PARK, Ill. – August 25, 2005 – Life Fitness, the leading manufacturer of cardiovascular and strength-training equipment, today announced its Signature Series selectorized strength line has won a 2005 Silver IDEA in the annual Industrial Design Excellence Awards. Sponsored by BusinessWeek magazine and run independently by the Industrial Designers Society of America, these awards “represent the best of the best from the U.S., Asia and Europe,” according to the magazine.

“We are extremely honored that our premium Life Fitness-branded selectorized line has been given an IDEA, which is one of the most prestigious design awards a company can receive,” said Steven Ward, director, industrial design, Life Fitness. “Fitness facilities increasingly are being designed with more sophisticated and contemporary architecture. Our Signature Series has a distinctive look and feel that complements and contributes to the overall style and ambience of today’s facilities, but the equipment remains inviting and easy for exercisers to use.”

In 2005, a record 1,380 companies and design firms entered the competition, now in its fifth year. The entries included 991 from the U.S. and 423 from other countries. Of the 148 awards that were bestowed, 38 were gold, 59 were silver and 51 were bronze. Awards were given in 14 categories; Life Fitness’s Signature Series, which was the only exercise equipment to receive an award, won in the Consumer Products category (see http://images.businessweek.com/ss/05/06/idea2005/source/39.htm).

About Signature Series

Life Fitness’ premium strength-training line, Signature Series is manufactured with superior ergonomics and durability making it ideal for all types of fitness facilities. Approachable and easy to use, Signature pieces will appeal to beginning exercisers yet also will meet the demands of advanced exercisers.

Each unit in the 18-piece line has oval tubing, contoured cushions and a low profile, which combine to create a clean, contemporary look. The integrated incremental weight system allows users to increase the weight in 5-pound increments. Gas-assisted seat and pad adjustments are physically easy to use, and clearly marked adjustment handles simplify the set-up process. All pieces in the Signature Series have instructional placards with simple visuals indicating proper form and muscle groups targeted. Full rear shrouds cover the weight stacks and add to the distinctive look (full front shrouds are optional), and the units are engineered with superior biomechanics to ensure movements are comfortable and natural to the exerciser, eliminating unwanted pressure to the joints.
